First, I am sorry that I did not post this in advance of the workshop. But, better late than never!
I was born in the midwest, in a small town in Illinois, Moline. Moline is the HQ of John Deere tractors and other farm implement manufacturers. During the time I grew up there in the late forties and fifties Moline was a prosperous community benefitting from the pent up demand for farm equipment that farmers had not bought during World War II.
In high school I loved my physics teacher and determined to make that my college major. I ended up going to Northwestern University and studying physics for two years, but then switched out of science into the humanities.
